Greetings from the Kelpies

Scotland is a land of legends and landscapes, where history and myth intertwine. Nowhere is this more evident than at The Helix, home to the awe-inspiring Kelpies. If you're planning a trip to Scotland, these towering sculptures are an absolute must-see.

Kelpie Face

A Modern Myth Made Steel

Rising 30 meters high (that's almost 100 feet!), the Kelpies are the world's largest equine sculptures. Designed by artist Andy Scott, they're a tribute to Scotland's horse-powered industrial past. But their form also draws on the ancient Scottish myth of the Kelpie, a shape-shifting water spirit that could lure unsuspecting travelers to their doom.

Up Close and Personal

As you approach the Kelpies, their sheer scale is breathtaking. The intricate details of their steel skin – made up of almost 1,000 unique panels – are incredible. You can walk right up to their base, circling them to admire every angle. Inside the sculptures, you can even see the impressive network of steel supports that hold them up.

Area around Kelpies

More Than Just Sculptures

The Kelpies are the centerpiece of The Helix, a vast parkland that's been transformed into a vibrant community space. There are walking and cycling paths, a lagoon, and even a splash play area for kids. We spent a lovely afternoon exploring the park, enjoying the scenery and the fresh air.

The Magic of Dusk

If you can, try to visit the Kelpies at dusk. As the sun sets, the sculptures are illuminated by a stunning light display, adding another layer of magic to the experience. We stayed until it was dark, and it was truly unforgettable.

Practical Tips for Your Visit:

  • Getting there: The Kelpies are located in Falkirk, easily accessible by car or train.

  • Admission: It's free to visit the Kelpies and The Helix!

  • Facilities: There's a visitor center with a cafe, restrooms, and a gift shop.

  • The best time to visit:  Early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds.

  • Don't forget: Your camera!

The Kelpies: A Testament to Creativity and Heritage

The Kelpies are a unique blend of art, engineering, and folklore. They stand as a testament to Scotland's rich heritage and its enduring spirit of creativity. Whether you're an art lover, a history buff, or simply looking for a memorable experience, a visit to the Kelpies is sure to leave a lasting impression.
